My name is M. Benjamin Spotts. I am a writer and photographer in my mid-twenties. My aim is to experience everything worth knowing, and I believe action must be taken to make that happen.

Have you noticed Western culture is increasingly virtual? Technology offers a wealth of vicarious experiences to be had instantly, painlessly, and cheaply. We are tempted to watch films about explorers who tramp the world while ourselves remaining tethered to suburbia. We fall in love through fictitious characters, virtually race cars and play Wii golf; some even farm on software plantations - devoting enough time to have actually done these things.

We are finite creatures for whom knowledge remains incomplete without experience, mere information lacking vitality. To the degree that something is worth knowing, I think we should endeavor after an encounter with it, an authentic experience that touches our senses. No wonder, then, that I love to travel. Journeys thrust us into the paths of strangers. Surprising relationships are forged and for a moment we see life as they do. Travel allows us to interact with a thousand lives while discovering the essence of our own.

I believe no greater concepts enter the mind of man than to fathom his origins, existence, and ultimate end. Education, whether private or institutional, fails whenever it ceases to equip people to live ardently in the pursuit of satisfying answers on these matters. The man who lives momentarily, without regard to his beginning, meaning, and destiny, is reduced to the nature of beasts. But one who disciplines himself to really savor life, to roll the richness of his humanity on the palette of thought, discerning in the present something of the mysteries of his past and future significance - that is the man who begins to touch his world with a living hand.

These journals represent a small portion of my attempt to do that. I hope you see in them a man reaching to experience that one thing which, above all, is worth knowing - my God, my meaning, and the essence of human life. I invite you to join me not only vicariously, but actually, in the call to fulfill man's chief end, "to glorify God and enjoy Him forever."

What is a pedadidact? (ped-uh*die-dact)

For the purposes of this blog and my writings, a pedadidact is one who teaches by real experiences from his travels, both physically and philosophically. The root is that from which we have pedals, pedestrian; a walker who steps through reality to discover truth and his relation to all things, so that he may relate his path to others on their way.
